d o r e v e n is a large scale, double-interleaved, book, made of fabric, hand painted and hand-stitched/bound. Unlike standard books – or, perhaps more similarly in scale and material, scrolls – the double-interleaved design means that the work folds outwards from the center to the left and the right, and to the top and bottom. Hand-painted across the semi-transparent fabric pages is the palindrome phrase ‘never odd or even’, mirrored vertically so that it can be read regardless of which side (left, right, top or bottom) you are reading from. The phrase implies that it is a fraction, as no whole number can be neither odd nor even. The sentence is separated into its individual letters which are distributed in pairs across the pages. Only when the book is closed and all pages interleaved is one able to read the sentence from beginning to end in entirety. When the book is completely open, to the center spread, it is blank. Viewers are encouraged to leaf through the work. These flocks comprise hundreds of thousands of starlings (small, black birds) whose unique flight pattern creates undulating, three-dimensional forms across the sky as they head to roost. The flock behaves as a singular “super sensory” organism, in the sense that there is no sole point of command driving the group's movement. Rather, each individual bird serves as a receptor to environmental information (wind and heat currents, potential predators). The information literally ripples through the flock, as each bird is also responding to and following the movement of its nearest neighbors, the seven nearest to be precise, who in turn respond to their seven nearest, creating an exponential chain of movement. The choice of painting, and doing so in white rather than black, serves to both emphasize and abstract the form: its multiplicity is heightened (as if for each mark, a bird) and its cloud-like form exaggerated. Upon close scrutiny it is found that the trunk of the tree is completely covered with discarde shells which were the outer body of certain insects. The startling fact is that the shell is intact; the form is exactly as it was when it's original inhabitant was inside, with only one difference. The inside has left, leaving the outer form which looks like an x-ray, producing the luminous effect. Suddenly we hear a chorus of sound coming from the dark leaves above. It is the sound of the insects hidden in the tree in their new metaphysical form. What is strange about the phenomenon is that we can see the insects’ shell forms clinging to the tree, empty shells, a form that life has abandoned. While we fix our eyes on these apparitions, we hear the sound of the insect in its new form hidden in the trees. We can hear it but we cannot see it. In a way, the sound we hear is a soul sound. on mirrored film Banner: 90 x 300 cm; Flag: 90 x 150 cm Presented at SLL, a collective artistic project space and atelier in Lisbon. A banner and flag were made to hang from the existing flag poles from the building’s former life as ‘SLL LAPA’, a neighborhood association and recreation center, to communicate a new message to passerbys, a literal and metaphorical reflection on time and perseverance in the midst of Lisbon’s second wave of the pandemic. Spanning the rear two poles is a banner which pictures a sculpture of the head of Janus, Roman God of entryways, thresholds, birth and death, beginnings and endings, in which two faces share the same head, but oppose one another, facing in opposite directions: one towards the future, the other the past.&nbsp; The image stretches out the midpoint, suggesting an extended, ‘suspended’ present hanging overhead. The flag is from the Movimento Correnteza, a leftist student movement founded in 2016 following the national unification of the former Rebel in UNE. Stills from the video are printed onto flat acrylic sheets which I then heat-sculpt, striving to recreate the original three- dimensionality of the flag in motion. This process is complicated by inherent disadvantages; the basic limitations working by hand, the complexity of recreating such a highly ephemeral material in motion, and the impossibility of reproducing such a sliver of a moment when working with an image of such a moment, with its own perspectival losses. Each diptych presents two corresponding photographs taken over a 24-hour period, with two photographs per hour. The photographs are of two silver, semi-mirrored sheets which were placed at the entrance of my studio, with one sheet tilted towards the exterior and the other inwards. These photographs were then printed onto semi-transparent, two-way mirror film and subsequently mounted to glass. Because of the inherent quality of the mirror film, traditionally used to mediate sunlight in office spaces, wherein the intensity and opacity of the reflection, and which side of the film produces the reflection, varies depending upon the angle and intensity of light, and thus time of day (whichever side has stronger, more direct light will be more reflective). The video presentings the clips in pairs, organized chronologically, with one moment or day at times appearing to flow seamlessly into the next (or, at others, seemingly backwards and inwards). The audio accompanying the video is of my breath. Steady, monotonous, automatic, continuous, rooted yet flowing.So lasting they are, the rivers!” Only think. Sources somewhere in the mountains pulsate and springs seep from a rock, join in a stream, in the current of a river, and the river flows through centuries, millennia. Tribes, nations pass, and the river is still there, and yet it is not, for water does not stay the same, only the place and the name persist, as a metaphor for a permanent form and changing matter. The same rivers flowed in Europe when none of today’s countries existed and no languages known to us were spoken. It is in the names of rivers that traces of lost tribes survive. They lived, though, so long ago that nothing is certain and scholars make guesses which to other scholars seem unfounded. It is not even known how many of these names come from before the Indo-European invasion, which is estimated to have taken place two thousand to three thousand years B. C. Our civilization poisoned river waters, and their contamination acquires a powerful emotional meaning. As the course of a river is a symbol of time, we are inclined to think of a poisoned time. And yet the sources continue to gush and we believe time will be purified one day. I am a worshipper of flowing and would like to entrust my sins to the waters, let them be carried to the sea. Rivers – Czeslaw Milosz (Translated by Robert Hass) I recently revisted this work to add more context surrounding its genesis. In the Summer of 2017 I moved to Porto, Portugal, with funding from Princeton University’s School of Architecture (where I was a graduate student at the time) to research an aspect of urbanism/urban development in the newly revitalized city following a major influx of tourism. After completing my research I took a year leave from the program to work at an architecture studio in Foz, a neighborhood just north of Porto that begins where the Douro River meets the Atlantic. This is when I began making the recordings that would eventually become Ebb and Flow. Previously, this work– in my mind– represented the first piece of the revitalization of my art practice which had become dormant over the preceding few years. (The result of this dormancy was, to an extent, a reason for my shift towards architecture). In other words, this was an artwork; an artistic enterprise and a mark in contrast to an architectural pursuit.
